Career Forum Mar 2017: Turn passion for games into a job with Madhead

With over 20 million downloads of its most successful game Tower of Saviors, mobile game developer and publisher Madhead is expanding fast and looking for 2D game artists, programmers, marketing executives, graphic designers and video editors. There are also internships available within the programming and marketing departments at the company, which is based at the Hong Kong Science Park.

Candidates are expected to be passionate about gaming and ready to embrace new developments as the mobile game industry is an ever-changing environment, says CEO Terry Tsang, who set up the company five years ago.

Candidates should also stay abreast of gaming industry news by attending mobile games conferences and fairs, Tsang suggests. “Build up a business network and connect with the people in the industry – candidates who are more familiar with the industry are more likely to get a job offer,” he adds.

While the company doesn’t have a management trainee scheme, it does have a mentorship programme, where supervisors will be on hand to help new joiners take on tasks such as mini-game development projects.

Tsang says game artists are advised to study the artistic style of Madhead’s games and submit a portfolio in similar style for evaluation. Candidates for video editor roles are expected to have some knowledge of 3D animation.

Programmers should have basic knowledge of C# and Unity 3D and know languages such as PHP, HTML, Javascript and MySQ. Proficiency in Amazon Web Base Services (AWS) is also an advantage for those applying for this position.

As Madhead grows rapidly, there are opportunities for talented graduates to progress up the career ladder at the company. Programmers may be promoted to senior or analyst programmer, while those who show great potential may be considered for the position of programmer lead and head up the whole team.

Another senior role that may appeal to ambitious graduates is assistant producer, who takes charge of managing the studio. “Duties of the assistant producer include managing the marketing, product, development and art teams,” Tsang says. “They will also assist senior management in strategic planning and operations management.”

In addition to a keen interest in mobile games, candidates should enjoy working in a team-oriented environment, be eager to contribute beyond their responsibilities, and be able to merge into a fast-paced, dynamic and creative culture.
